The Dark Side of Technology: How High-Tech Advancements Are Increasing Diseases

The Dark Side of Technology: How High-Tech Advancements Are Increasing Diseases

Introduction

In today’s fast-paced world, technology has become an integral part of our lives. From smartphones to AI-driven workplaces, our dependence on high-tech devices is greater than ever. While technology has made life easier, it has also given rise to various health issues. Diseases related to prolonged screen exposure, sedentary lifestyles, and radiation are increasing at an alarming rate. As a first-year BJMC student, I feel it is crucial to highlight these concerns so that people can adopt a healthier approach toward technology use.

Health Issues Due to High-Tech Devices

1. Digital Eye Strain and Vision Problems

The excessive use of screens—whether for work, studies, or entertainment—has led to a rise in vision-related problems. Digital Eye Strain (DES) or Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is becoming common among students and professionals. Symptoms include dry eyes, headaches, and blurred vision.

2. Obesity and Sedentary Lifestyle

With automation reducing physical labor, people are spending more time sitting and less time moving. Whether it’s watching OTT platforms for hours or working on laptops, a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Lack of physical activity due to excessive screen time is a major concern for today’s youth.

3. Mental Health Disorders

Social media addiction and the pressure to stay online 24/7 have led to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Cyberbullying, comparison culture, and digital overconsumption negatively impact mental health. Studies show that excessive screen time disrupts sleep patterns, causing insomnia and fatigue.

4. Radiation Exposure and Health Risks

The growing use of wireless devices exposes people to electromagnetic radiation. While research is ongoing, some studies suggest long-term exposure to radiation from mobile phones and Wi-Fi routers could increase the risk of certain illnesses, including brain tumors.

5. Tech-Induced Posture Problems

‘Text neck’ and ‘hunched shoulders’ are becoming common due to improper posture while using smartphones and laptops. Poor ergonomics lead to chronic back and neck pain, affecting productivity and overall well-being.

Solutions: How to Reduce Tech-Induced Health Issues

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: After every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to reduce eye strain.

Maintain a Balanced Routine: Avoid excessive screen time and take regular breaks to stretch and walk around.

Limit Social Media Usage: Set screen time limits and focus on real-world interactions to reduce anxiety and stress.

Practice Good Posture: Sit in an ergonomic position while working on devices to prevent spine-related problems.

Stay Physically Active: Engage in outdoor activities, yoga, or workouts to counteract the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

Conclusion

While technology has undoubtedly improved our lives, its overuse is leading to serious health concerns. Being mindful of screen time, maintaining an active lifestyle, and practicing digital detox can help minimize these risks. As future media professionals, it is our responsibility to create awareness and promote a healthier tech-life balance.
